The Feminist Woman’s Dilemma: She Wants All Rights and Accepts No Obligations

1. From a Revolution Against Injustice to a New Injustice

Feminism originally began as a reaction to real injustice experienced by Western women: deprivation of inheritance, prevention from education, commodification in marriage, and humiliation of their human dignity. It would have been possible for the movement to stop at the point of removing this injustice and establishing justice. But the movement did not stop; rather, it went beyond its limits until it itself became a form of injustice, but injustice in a new guise: injustice to human nature, injustice to the man, and injustice to the woman herself when she was burdened with responsibilities for which she was not created, and deprived of her tranquility and peace of mind in the name of “liberation.”

The clearest evidence of this deviation is what we see today in the West from extremist feminist models demanding the right to expose their breasts in the streets on an equal basis with men, and perhaps going beyond that in the future to even stranger demands. What began with the slogan “equality in rights” ended with completely blurring the natural differences between male and female, until we began to see women abandoning their gentleness and femininity in pursuit of a supposed “equality” with men, thus losing their identity without gaining anything real.

2. The Real Dilemma: All Rights Without Duties

The essence of the crisis of the feminist woman is that she wants to be “a woman” when that serves her, and “a man” when she desires his authority and privileges. Thus, she takes all the rights of women, including financial maintenance, guardianship, and care, while at the same time demanding the rights of men, including leadership, independence, and freedom from every restriction, without accepting any corresponding obligation except according to her personal preference.

She wants a full inheritance but rejects the guardianship associated with her unequal share of inheritance and connected to the responsibilities placed upon her. She wants financial maintenance but rejects obedience that was made obligatory upon her husband in return for imposing financial maintenance and care upon him for her. She wants respect but rejects the regulations that preserve this respect in the first place.

This is precisely the injustice that Islamic law prohibited and warned against, and Allah said:

{And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them.} (Al-Baqarah: 228)

Thus, He made the balance between rights and obligations the just measure, rather than for a woman to select from the religion what pleases her and leave what does not please her from the same divine law.

3. Obedience to the Husband: Worship, Not Humiliation

The Islamist feminist woman views obedience to the husband as an insult to the dignity of the woman, whereas Islamic law made a Muslim woman’s obedience to her husband an act of worship for which she is rewarded and through which she enters Paradise. It was rapported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“If a woman performs her five prayers, fasts her month, guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter Paradise through whichever gate of Paradise you wish.” (Narrated by Ahmad)

Thus, obedience to the husband was associated with prayer, fasting, and guarding chastity, and it was made one of the causes of entering Paradise, not one of the causes of humiliation as feminism portrays it.

This obedience is originally restricted to what is right and proper; there is no obedience to a husband in disobedience to Allah. But the problem is that the feminist woman rejects even obedience in what is right and proper, and considers every direction from her husband an interference in her “independence.”

4. Asking Permission to Go Out: Protection, Not Imprisonment

Among the regulations that feminism objects to is the requirement that the wife ask her husband’s permission before going out. Yet this ruling is not imprisonment of the woman; rather, it is an organization of a household based on consultation and shared responsibility.

The husband is responsible for caring for his family and protecting them, and he cannot fulfill this responsibility while not knowing where his wife is going and when she will return.

It was reported in the hadith that when the Prophet ﷺ was asked, “Which women are the best?” he said:

“The one who pleases him when he looks at her, obeys him when he commands her, and does not oppose him regarding herself or his wealth in what he dislikes.” (Narrated by Al-Nasa’i and Ahmad)

This organization does not mean eliminating the woman’s will; rather, it means building a household upon trust and consultation.

5. The Mahram in Travel: Protection, Not Suffocation

Among the rulings that most provoke the feminist woman is the requirement of a mahram for the woman when travelling, and portraying it as shackling her freedom.

But the Prophet ﷺ explicitly stated this ruling as mercy toward her, not as a restriction upon her. He said:

“A woman should not travel for three days except with a mahram.” (Agreed upon)

Travel by its nature exposes a person to dangers that cannot be guaranteed against, from treachery on the road to harassment by strangers. The woman is physically weaker and more exposed to being targeted, so this ruling came as a protective shield, not as an arbitrary restriction.

It is strange that legislation protecting a woman from real dangers is viewed as “oppression,” while risking herself by travelling alone through unknown environments is viewed as “liberation”!

6. Polygamy: A Right for the Man With Regulations, Not “Betrayal”

Among the strangest manifestations of feminist rebellion is describing polygamy—which is an explicit Islamic ruling—as “betrayal” or “humiliation,” while Allah said:

{then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one.} (An-Nisa’: 3)

Polygamy is neither chaos nor an unrestricted permission. Rather, it is a right restricted by the condition of strict justice, and whoever is unable to be just must limit himself to one.

When the feminist woman describes a ruling revealed by Allah with the term “betrayal,” she is in reality objecting to Allah’s ruling itself, not merely to a human action. This is a fundamental difference between legitimate criticism of a wrongful application and rejection of the legislation itself.

7. Clothing and Modesty: Chastity, Not Oppression

Likewise, feminism views the regulations of clothing, modesty, and hijab as restrictions imposed upon the woman’s body, whereas Islamic law made them a protection of her dignity from vulgarity.

Allah said:

{O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.} (Al-Ahzab: 59)

The purpose is explicitly stated in the verse: protection from harm, not suppressing personality or erasing identity.

8. The Intellectual Roots: Desire Presented Above Islamic Law

The essence of the crisis of the feminist woman affiliated with islam is that she attempts to reconcile two contradictory systems: a system of faith based upon submission to the command of Allah and His Messenger, and a feminist system based upon placing the desire of the self above every text.

This reconciliation is impossible from the outset, because true faith requires complete submission. Allah said:

{It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.} (Al-Ahzab: 36)

Whoever wants to choose from Islamic law what agrees with her desires and reject what contradicts them has made her desires the judge over Islamic law, rather than Islamic law being the judge over her desires. This is precisely what Allah described as clear error.

9. Feminism affiliated with islam: A Step of the Steps of Satan

Feminism affiliated with islam is nothing but a transitional stage. It begins with demands that appear reasonable or even apparently legitimate, then gradually progresses toward more confrontation with fundamental principles, Allah warned against the steps of Satan:

{O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.} (An-Nur: 21)

The woman who begins by rejecting obedience to her husband often ends by rejecting hijab. The one who rejects hijab finds it easier to reject the regulations governing mixing between men and women, and so the steps continue until they reach the same outcomes that Western feminism has reached, because the intellectual foundation is one: placing the desire of the self above the command of the Creator.

10. The Man’s Responsibility: Is the Man Responsible for the Spread of Feminist Thought?

It is certain that the spread of feminist thought is not something that arose at the present moment, but rather the result of continuous work for years, even decades. And if we are living in an era whose title is the empowerment of women, then there is no doubt that women will have a major and important role in rebelling against this thought that deviates from human nature, which women have tasted the bitterness of and experienced this painful experiment with all its many negative aspects and few positive aspects, and they desire to find an alternative.

But at the same time, she finds it difficult to trust the man who has lied to her at one time and manipulated her feelings at another, and all those men who view her as merely a piece of flesh rather than as an educated and conscious being with feelings, courageous positions, and exceptional intelligence enabling her to distinguish between truth and falsehood, and a memory through which she knows who behaved well and who treated her disrespectfully.

Therefore, what most women need and seek is a righteous and trustworthy man, a man of principles who is determined to preserve the woman without wronging her, empower her with her rights, provide her with the means of dignified living, and not expose her to disappointment. Rather, he makes her feel secure about the future and makes her feel that her husband is more concerned about her than she is about herself.

And you will then see that the woman does not want evil for her husband, but loves good for him, and that she is a follower rather than the one being followed. She cannot rebel against the will of her Lord without the assistance of the man who himself has rebelled against the commands of Allah and turned away from the ruling of the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the Sharia of Muhammad ﷺ.

Building a balanced family within the heart of a secular modern society is one of the greatest challenges facing both man and woman. Although the woman bears a considerable share of the responsibility in maintaining the balance and displaying patience and righteousness, the greatest responsibility is borne by the man because of the trust and guardianship with which Allah has charged him and his responsibility to preserve religion and righteousness.

Allah made the messengers men, as well as the prophets, caliphs, imams, preachers, rulers, and judges, and the condition of being male is present in all leadership positions in the Ummah.

11. Conclusion: True Liberation Is in Submission, Not Rebellion

The true Muslim woman knows that her real dignity is not in imitating the man or rebelling against the obligations imposed upon her by her Lord, but rather in complete submission to the rulings of her Creator, who knows what is best for her.

True liberation is not in breaking every restriction, but in knowing that some restrictions are themselves the very essence of freedom, protection, and mercy.

The woman who wants to be a man and a woman at the same time, taking all rights while rejecting all obligations altogether, has gained nothing except doubled exhaustion and an identity lost between two worlds.

Whereas if she submits to the command of her Lord, she will find the tranquility that Allah promised in His saying:

{And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.} (Ar-Rum: 21)
